FAQ

Which species of wood is the best when constructing the roof truss?

For roof truss the best option is to select pine or fir wood since this species of wood is solid and resilient. Moreover, it is soft and easy to be finished.

How can we prepare the wooden surface before painting?

Wood preparation can be divided into three stages:

a)      sanding and cleaning, always towards wood grains, otherwise there might occur some scratches across the grains. It’s recommended to use suitable sand paper.
b)      polishing – the whole surface must be smoothed by sand paper of 180-240 grit. The more smooth wood, the nicer painting coat we obtain.
c)      dedusting, cleaning – the dust which is left due to polishing must be removed at the beginning by using a half-wet cloth. Polishing facilitates application, prevents from lifting wood fibres during the  application of first layer, emphasizes the colour and exposes the structure of wood grains.

After performing the three aforementioned activities we can proceed with painting.

Why is it important to sand the interlayer surface?

After the first painting some wood fibres may raise and create uneven porous surface. The same phenomena may occur with dust which adhered to the freshly painted coat. Thus, in order to eliminate the roughness, it’s necessary to sand the painted surface once again by using a fine sandpaper (240 grit) and remove the dust. Additionally, sanding contributes to adhesiveness of subsequent layer. After performing these operations, we will obtain an ideally smooth surface.

I would like to paint the old parquet floor which had been previously painted – unfortunately, I don’t know which varnish to use in order to renew it?

In this case, the best solution is to remove the old coating by sanding the whole parquet floor – only then can we be sure that the obtained coating will be uniform and fine. We apply VIDARON Varnish (without prime) three times onto the parquet’s surface.

What measures shall I take in order to prevent wood from getting darker?

In order to prevent wood from getting darker it’s necessary to apply wood preservative containing UV filter, e.g. VIDARON Exterior Varnish.

How to protect wood against blue stain?

Wood can be protected against blue stain by applying VIDARON products such as:  Fire Retardant Preservative, Construction Preservative, Copper Preservative or Protective-Decorative Preservative.

What product shall I use in order to protect my summer house against changeable weather conditions?

At the beginning we have to ask ourselves the following question: what gloss degree do we want to obtain?:

a) matt coating – we apply VIDARON Protective – Decorative Preservative. It’s recommended to apply only one coat of colourless Protective – Decorative Preservative + two coats of Protective – Decorative Preservative in colour version.

b) satin gloss – in order to prevent from fungi, blue stain and insects we apply colourless VIDARON Protective – Decorative Preservative, whereas as a top coat - VIDARON Protective – Decorative Stain Pro.

c) gloss – in order to prevent from fungi, blue stain and insects we apply colourless VIDARON Protective – Decorative Preservative, whereas as a top coat - VIDARON Protective – Decorative Varnish.

Can I apply varnish or stain upon previously painted wood?

Yes, the painted wood can be covered with products which form sealed coats such as varnish, stain or lacquer. It’s worth remembering to prepare the surface suitably, though.

What product would be the most suitable to protect the roof truss?

In order to provide full protection for wooden elements of the roof, it’s recommended to apply VIDARON Construction Preservative. The preservative ensures protection for construction wood against influence of insects and fungi, which contribute to wood decay. Thanks to special formula of the product, the wood is penetrated deeply and protected against influence of weather conditions and cannot be washed out. The preservative does not cause corrosion of metal elements.

What’s the most efficient way to get rid of old and destroyed varnish coat?

In this case, the coat’s condition forces us to take certain actions:

a) in the event of thin varnish coats, loose paint coats are removed by a brush or sand paper. Another stage is dust removal and painting.
b) in the event of peeling, we must remove the coat till obtaining the bare wood. After removing the coat carefully by a scraper and sanding (240 grit),we dedust the cleaned surface and wipe it by half-wet cloth.

What measures need to be taken before varnish application?

Wood preparation before varnish application can be divided into three stages:

a)      sanding and cleaning, always towards wood grains, otherwise there might occur some scratches across the grains. It’s recommended to use suitable sand paper between 80 and 120 grit (we adjust the type of sandpaper depending on the wood condition)

b)      polishing – the whole surface must be smoothed by sand paper of 180-240 grit. The more smooth wood, the nicer painting coat we obtain.

c)       dedusting, cleaning – the dust which is left due to polishing must be removed by using a brush or a vacuum cleaner.

After performing the three aforementioned activities we can proceed with painting.

How can I remove efficiently fungi from the wood surface?

The most efficient way of getting rid of fungi from the wood surface is application of VIDARON Biocidal Agent.

How can I remove a resin from the wood surface?

The resin on the wood surface can be easily removed by 25% of acetone solution.

What is the preservative intended for?

The preservative is intended for protecting construction materials against destructive influence of fungi, mould, blue stain, insects and fire. In the construction industry preservatives are used mostly to preserve wood. They penetrate deeply wood pores, usually they contain strong biocidal agents of a very wide range of functions, which protect wood against fungi, moisture and insects. Due to the fact that they do not form a coat, the subsequent renovation is easy to carry out – it’s not necessary to remove the old and partly destroyed coat – it’s sufficient to preserve the wood only.

What’s the reason of peeling off coats?

The most frequent reasons of peeling off coats are:

a)      incorrect surface preparation,

b)      poor adhesiveness – refers to renovation (incorrect application of new coats upon old ones)

c)       painting unseasoned wood of high humidity, coat damages (wood cracks, scratches, mechanical damages of exterior coats)

I would like to preserve the natural texture of wood grains and I don’t want to use products with gloss?

In this case, the best solution is to apply VIDARON Protective-Decorative Preservative (available in colourless colour versions),which fully protects wood (against blue stain, technical wood pests and fungi) and preserves the natural texture of wood grains.

Which tool is better when painting the floor, a paintbrush or a roller?

In the event of painting large surfaces it’s definitely recommended to use rollers. Before purchase, it’s necessary to check whether a particular roller is suitable for the varnish we want to apply. By taking advantage of a roller, we can be certain that the varnish will be applied uniformly and as a result, we will obtain a smooth surface.

Are solvent-based varnishes hazardous for human health?

Solvent-based varnishes are not health hazardous. The varnishes with authorization on the European Union market must comply with strict requirements connected with VOC limits (Volatile Organic Compounds). The products of VIDARON brand meet all the compulsory requirements.

I have old parquet floor, which is quite ruined in passages, I would like to refurbish it – do I have to sand it, and which varnish would be the most suitable?

In this case, the best solution would be removal of the old coat by sanding the whole parquet surface – only then can we be certain that the coat will be uniform and fine. By renovation painting only, we cannot be guaranteed one hundred percent  - such an operation is efficient in the event of small elements which are not quite visible. When we want to take advantage of renovation painting, at the beginning we have to sand the surface and remove the dust and grease – after carrying out these activities we can proceed with painting. As regards worn varnish passages, it’s not recommended to take advantage of renovation painting, we definitely advise to sand the whole parquet surface. VIDARON Varnish (without primer) is recommended to be applied both, in the case of renovation painting and painting after performing sanding.

Which product would be the most suitable to preserve construction wood?

The product selection depends on what destructive factors impacting the wood might be expected in the future. The best protection will be ensured by applying multi-purpose preservative – VIDARON Construction Preservative, which can fully protect wood used for a rood truss. The roof truss can also be protected by VIDARON Fire Retardant Preservative.

Which product would be the best to protect the garden furniture?

In order to protect the garden furniture against changeable weather condition it’s necessary to choose one of the following options:

a) VIDARON Protective – Decorative Preservative (colourless) + two coats of the same preservative in colour version.

c) VIDARON Protective – Decorative Preservative (colourless) + two coats of Protective – Decorative Varnish or  Super Efficient Varnish.

d) VIDARON wood oil – it’s necessary to apply 2/3 coats of the oil. The product provides a fine half-matt decorative effect, and at the same time the wood remains natural in touch.

What happens if during the wood painting I will apply too much of the material?

During application it’s necessary to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations – regarding the surface preparation, the number of coats and efficiency per m². Too thick application may spoil the final visual effect (e.g. the total disappearance of wood structure – the paint effect etc.),can also contribute to coat peeling.

Is there an exterior protective coat which protects against UV radiation?

Yes, there are coats of this type. All the products contain components protecting against UV radiation – Protective–Decorative Preservative (colours),VIDARON Stain Pro, Protective–Decorative Varnish and Super Efficient, Exterior Varnish. Colourless products are less resistant to UV radiation, since they do not contain iron pigments and UV rays impact the wood surface directly.

Why does the coat look differently than the colour pattern shown on the container?

The final colour effect on wood can be influenced by the following factors:

a) species of wood,
b) wood density – the poorer growth of wood grain, the more absorptiveness and darker colour,
c) quality of surface preparation before painting (after planing, sanding and polishing),
d) the number and thickness of applied coats,
e) application method (a paintbrush, a roller, spraying method, sponge).

Can we take advantage of spraying method in the event of varnish application?

Yes, VIDARON Protective-Decorative Varnish can be applied by spraying method.
